Sealcoating
The best way to extend the life of your asphalt is by sealcoating. Sealcoating is the process of applying a specially-formulated liquid emulsion to asphalt pavement. The liquid hardens to become a seal that will protect the coated asphalt surface from moisture penetration, UV rays, and even chemicals that might get spilled on the pavement. Sealcoating your asphalt also smoothens its surfaces, reducing friction between the pavement and the wheels of the vehicles.
It is important to note that sealcoating is not the same as asphalt paving. Asphalt paving is the general term used when fresh, hot asphalt is poured onto the pavement. It is usually done when creating a new road, driveway, or parking lot. Asphalt paving is also used for repairing driveways with massive cracks and potholes that filling and patching can no longer resolve.
On the other hand, sealcoating is not intended for driveway repairs. Technically, sealcoating is a form of asphalt maintenance. Its purpose is to protect the pavement from future damages, which means that it will not resolve existing defects. Small cracks and other minute imperfections may be addressed by sealcoating, but it is not intended for crack sealing or pothole repair whatsoever.
